Meet Dr. Bob Dewhirst

Bob Dewhirst

D.D.S., D. Ortho.

Dr. Dewhirst completed his dentistry degree at the University of Toronto in 1969. Following that, he went on to do a one year internship at McGill University with the Montreal Children's Hospital. He then attended graduate training in Orthodontics at the University of Toronto, completed the program in 1972, and received his Diploma of Orthodontics (D. Ortho.) in 1973. After graduation, he worked for the Maxillo-Facial Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, taught an undergraduate program for Orthodontics at U of T, and worked as an Orthodontist for the Children's Aid Society. He has been an Orthodontist in private practice in Guelph since 1973.

Dr. Dewhirst is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO), the Toronto Orthodontic Study Club, the U of T Graduate Orthodontic Alumni Association, the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), the Waterloo Wellington Dental Society, and the Guelph Hospital Dentists. He is also a lifetime member of the Ontario Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Dewhirst has a special interest in treating patients with facial deformities after gaining experience while employed with the children's hospitals in Montreal and Toronto. His graduate thesis was regarding the study of Orthodontic treatment results of patients with cleft lip and palate. He is a supporter of AboutFace International - an organization dedicated to "transforming the lives of people with facial differences."

In Guelph, Dr. Dewhirst is a founding member of the Guelph Arts Council and has been an executive member of this organization for many years. He has a very active lifestyle including cycling (both mountain and road biking), skiing (both downhill and Nordic), tennis, hiking and reading. He also has an interest in the arts. Many of these interests are shared with his wife, Betty, and two children, Tim and Tobi. When not in Guelph, he is often pursuing these interests at Whistler in British Columbia.

Dr. Dewhirst and his wife chose to raise their children in Guelph, and both attended schools in the community. His son Tim is married to Beth and both are professors at Universities. Tim teaches in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies at the University of Guelph. His daughter Tobi has followed in her father's footsteps, and is currently a dental hygienist working in both general and Orthodontic practices in Kitchener-Waterloo.
