Mouth Guards

Mouth guards protect your teeth and gums from injury while playing contact sports.

Mouth Guards

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists and The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association recommend mouth guards be used by players in a range of contact and non-contact, competitive and non-competitive sports.

They include, but are not limited to ice hockey, field hockey, rugby, football, wrestling, boxing, martial arts, basketball, skiing, bicycling, soccer, softball and lacrosse.

Types:

  • There are 3 types of mouth guards: pre-made, boil and bite, custom made
  • During braces we recommend pre-made to allow for ongoing tooth movement
  • If needed, the strap can be used to attach to a helmet
  • Once the braces are off, custom made mouth guards are recommended

Caring:

  • Clean your mouth guard by rinsing it with water or mouthwash before use and brushing it with your toothbrush and toothpaste after use
  • Store it in a protective case
  • Avoid high temperatures: hot water, sunlight
  • Replace it if it is worn out after each sports season
  • Removable retainers must be removed while wearing a mouth guard
