Dr. Murrell & His Big Brother, By Thomas J Price
This bronze, nine-foot-tall statue is part of a series called "Within the Folds".
"The continuation of a series of large bronze figures (begun in 2013), this new 9ft tall presentation of a black man in casual clothing – that resists the usual triumphant poses associated with high status monumental figures – examines the impact the visual stories told within societies can have on our understandings of one another," Price says of this statue on his website.
Born in the UK in 1981, Price is known for his large-scale sculptures. He focuses on the emotions and inner lives of his made-up characters, shedding light on how we pick up on social cues and expectations.
Price creates his work using a mix of classic sculpting techniques and modern digital tools. He plays with how things are viewed, what they’re made of, and their size, to push boundaries and invite a more meaningful connection. His pieces mix old influences with a fresh twist – subtle at first, but they stand quietly in public spaces as symbols of change.
