Wondering if traditional metal braces are the only kind available? At Village Orthodontics, we offer different types of braces for varying styles and requirements. Our orthodontists review what’s available and who they are best for.
What are the different types of braces?
Did you know there are different types of braces beyond the traditional metal kind? Advances in orthodontic treatment have brought us options for patients who have unique needs or preferences. Today we’ll explain the types of metal braces available at Village Orthodontics.
Metal Braces (Traditional)
As the most common type of braces, these are the type everyone thinks of and probably the one you remember seeing your friends wear in your youth, as they have been a go-to method for straightening teeth for decades.
More comfortable today than ever before, they’re made of high-grade stainless steel. Metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires, and afford you the option to add coloured elastics (rubber bands) to match your style.
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Made of clear materials, ceramic braces are popular with older teenagers and adults since they’re less visible on your teeth than metal braces.
One thing to keep in mind is that these will require more attention to oral hygiene than traditional braces, as the ceramic type are larger in size and more brittle than their metal cousins. We tend to use them on upper front teeth rather than on lower teeth.
Lingual Braces
We call these the “invisible” braces as they’re hidden behind the teeth, so you can’t see them when you smile. Plus, we customize them to match the shape of your teeth by having the metal appliances created uniquely for you.
A great option for models, actors and actresses, athletes, professionals and musicians who play wind instruments, these will make your smile look great during and after treatment.
Self-Ligating Braces
These braces come with clear or ceramic brackets, or the traditional metal variety. Though they are the same size as metal braces, elastics are replaced with a specialized clip to help the archwire guide teeth into place.
The clip requires fewer adjustments because we don’t have to replace elastics, and reduces the amount of pressure placed on each tooth.
Clear Aligners
This series of invisible, clear and comfortable acrylic trays straighten your teeth like braces. However, they are removable to allow you to eat and drink whatever you want while you’re being treated. Plus, brushing and flossing are made easier. The aligners are metal-free, so there’s no risk of getting abrasions in your mouth from wires during treatment.
No matter your style or requirements, we will be happy to discuss which type of braces will work best for you and your needs.
